The discrimination, injustice, and cruelty Gwendolyn experienced at the hands of the art professor dramatically affected her life for almost 50 years, but did not diminish her spirit, her joy, or her pursuit of justice. On several occasions, she reached out to the University in efforts to right the wrong but found no one willing to advocate her case.

In the end, the dramatic breakthrough in this story happened by chance, facilitated by two strangers. The first helped reverse an injustice,
and the second helped to heal Gwendolyn’s soul.

A MEETING AT THE AIRPORT

“This whole process of, you know, righting this wrong occurred by chance — meeting at the airport!”

”All right, I met Gwen at the Atlanta Airport. We had both recently landed at about 1:00 in the morning…”

A LAMENT

“Lament is imperative to healing. What lament means is that we have a passionate expression of grief or sadness. It means that we actually feel it and that we can express it.”

“You turn to God, you bring your complaint, you ask boldly, and then you trust God.”

“Our culture today does not do a good job with lament.”
